GOULDIAN FINCHES MEDICINES
Every breeder encounters serious health problems of birds at least once in his career. The seriousness of a problem depends of numerous factors and the outcome is never certain. Hygiene is the basic and almost the only postulate. If the flock catches any of the most dangerous viral diseases, which spread at the speed of light, big trouble is in sight. However, this problem rarely occurs and almost never in the case of serious breeders. Current problems occur when individual birds fall ill due to a drop in immunity and this can be treated as a normal phenomenon. Treatment of such birds is reduced to a light antibiotic with vitamins. If this does not help, then one of numerous bacteria is in question, which is not harmful to the flock but only to the diseased bird. Very seldom does a bird fall ill from an infection brought from the outside. If this happens, and we care about the bird, the only way to cure it is to take a sample of its faeces for testing and to start a treatment on the basis of antibiogram. My experiences with local private laboratories which perform such tests are disastrously bad. First they could not realize that I had brought a bird sample for testing. If it had been from a dog they would, but that was absolutely not the same thing. When I eventually managed to explain what I wanted and stressed that they should not forget to do an antibiogram regardless of what they find in the sample I thought that I finally solved the problem. However, all my hopes were in vain, they did not do the antibiogram since their rules state it should not be done when the found bacteria are not pathogenic. Of course, they did not forget to charge for their work, and I came out the loser. And the same thing once again. When I got sick of their ignorance, I solved the problem in a state hospital where I finally got the antibiogram. However, this case was not resolved favourably for the bird. Its immunity dropped so much that it died in spite of medicines. You might be guessing that this was a bird from one of the breeders, which I had bought with the intention of forming a flock. The basic reason of the bird’s immunity drop is poor care during its growth. The same thing could also happen when the female is overtaxed with egg laying. Sometimes such a female dies regardless of the treatment. I have not had such a case since i have several pairs in each bloodline, which are rotated in nests after 2 rounds of mating. In this way I always get large and disease-resistant birds. The only drawback of such an approach is that one has to work with at least 50 birds. Treatments are best done with medicines which are a combination of several antibiotics. Personally, I do not put great trust in medicines which have not been made especially for birds, but are used for almost all domestic animals. When I am in need of medicines, I order them from the Australian firm ‘’Vetafarm’’. My opinion is that birds cannot be professionally reared without medicines from this firm. ’RonivetS’’, ‘’Coccivet’’, ‘’Probotic’’, ‘’Wormout Gel’’ and Scatt’’ are medicines which I use and recommend to everybody.
As regards chemicals for disinfection of rooms where birds are reared and cages, I recognize only the products of world famous manufacturers who deal in birth health issues. If you use untested preparations, you have a great opportunity to poison your birds, which has already happened to some of breeders. The firm ‘’Quiko’’ is incontestable with regard to this issue. When purchasing a bird, quarantine of at least 20 days is compulsory, in order to find out whether the bird has any disease. If the purchased bird is ill, treatment of such a bird is a waste of time. The best remedy in the world is prevention and hygiene.
